As a special accessory of the surge arrester, the disconnector is used in series connection with the surge arrester.The purpose is to use the power frequency short-circuit current to make the disconnector act when the surge arrester fails abnormally, so that the grounding termination of the disconnector is automatically disconnected, and the arrester is out of operation to prevent further expansion of the accident,and gives the visibility of the faulty surge arrester, which is convenient for maintenance personnel and finds faults for maintenance and replacement. When the lightning arrester is in normal working state, the disconnector does not act and has a low impedance, which does not affect the original working state of the system and the lightning arrester. The protection features ensure uninterrupted power supply, so that the surge arrester truly meets the requirements of "maintenance-free" use. In foreign countries, such as Europe and the United States, Japan, Southeast Asia and other countries and regions, the distribution type surge arrester, power station type surge arrester and line type surge arresters operating in the power grid have generally used disconnectors. According to the principle of use and performance, the disconnector is divided into a thermal melt disconnector and thermal explosion disconnector. The thermal melt disconnector utilizes the short-circuit current flowing through the failed surge arrester to fuse the alloy fuse (or solder) in the disconnector to achieve the purpose of disconnection. The arc is generated in the device, and the thermal explosion element is detonated to achieve the purpose of separation.
It can be disconnected not only under large power frequency fault current (>50A), but also under small fault current (50mA).
It can be matched with the reclosing function of the circuit breaker, not only for various voltage levels and various types of surge arresters, but also for different grounding systems (neutral grounding and ungrounding systems).

Surge arresters with voltage levels below 36KV are installed with insulating brackets. The surge arrester is fixed with insulating bracket, and the disconnector is installed on the lower terminal of the surge arrester. The grounding wire is made of braided soft copper wire with a length of about 3000mm to ensure that the surge arrester body has enough insulation distance after separation.
